Our shop is situated at 237 Old Main Road, Botha's Hill, and is open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm and every Saturday from 8am to 12 noon. Entrance to the parking area is off Kearsney Road.
About Us:
Embocraft was started in 1986 to alleviate poverty in the areas surrounding Botha’s Hill and the Valley of a Thousand Hills in KwaZulu Natal. Due to the success in these areas, training is now held through out the entire province. Embocraft became a Training Trust in 1988.
In 1999, CARE Deutschland purchased the old Botha’s Hill Post Office to facilitate training. The property is ideally situated within close proximity to the “Embo” and “Valley of a Thousand Hills” communities and also on the main road of 1000 Hills Tourism route.
In 2001, Lions Clubs International Foundation sponsored the building of an additional 610 square metres of training facilities on the property.
Embocraft is currently in the process of applying for accreditation with the relevant SETA’s. At present it is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
Through mentoring programs and with the introduction of relevant business training Embocraft is assisting groups in the formation of business structures and developing potential entrepreneurs with the aim of achieving sustainable income generation projects. Embocraft has a constant stream of requests from communities in need of skills training that requires a constant stream of donor funding.
The Embo Region:
Embo is located on the periphery of the metropolis of Durban. The area could be more aptly described as a peri-urban informal settlement, with no formal town planning demarcations and much less densely populated than a typical squatter settlement. Many households have their own plots of land and cattle herding is prevalent. The area is located directly adjacent to Hillcrest, an affluent and predominately white suburb of Durban, which has experienced a tremendous growth in commercial activity over the last five years.
The landscape is characterised by a high sandstone ridge and deeply incised valleys, and forms part of the tourist attraction area known as “The Valley of a Thousand Hills.” The population of 25 000 is exclusively black and Zulu-speaking, with an average household size of 5, and 88% considered poor. Although located within the borders of the metro with democratically elected ward councilors, the area is also subject to traditional, authoritarian leadership of the amaKhosi (chiefs) and Indunas (headmen). Tension often exists between these two power structures. HIV/AIDS is endemic in the area with locals currently quoting a prevalence rate of 67%.
